Week 3: I AM The True Vine

I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
John 15:1

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
John 15:5

In the recent aftermath of Hurricane Laura, a common sight in our great state of Louisiana is to see piles of branches and tree limbs along the side of the road. Residents have spent weeks cleaning up debris and clearing out the mess from this devastating storm, and now our streets are lined with the remains. As we see all of the dead limbs and branches lying around, it has been interesting to note how quickly they turn from vibrant green to lifeless brown. As the branches are severed from the root system of the tree, life fades very quickly. What was once vibrant and full of life is so quickly dead and discarded.

In our passage today, Jesus likens himself to the root system, the source of life, when He says, “I AM the true vine.” The comparison is so poignant. If we, as branches, are connected to the true vine, then we are in line for receiving all of the nourishment and nutrients needed to sustain life. Jesus explains this further by saying when we “abide” in Him, we can then grow, be healthy, and produce fruit!

However, as soon as we are cut off from the source, there is no way to sustain life. If we don’t abide in Him, then He cannot provide the nourishment we need for our lives to thrive. We cannot produce fruit, including the fruit of the Spirit, if we are not abiding in Him by staying connected in relationship.

Our response to this statement from Jesus is simple; we must stay connected, whatever the cost! How do we stay connected and abide? Make prayer a lifestyle. Stay deep in the word of God. Find a way to connect to His body, His family, the Church! Don’t allow life, busyness, and the demands of our culture to draw you away from the basic tenets of a relationship with Jesus.

Let’s take the challenge this week to abide with Him more deeply than ever before. Take inventory of your prayer life, Bible study practices, and connection to His body. If those things need to be shored up, make it happen this week!

He is the True Vine. He is all that you need. Let’s stay connected to our source, the Great I Am, so that we can thrive, grow, and show His love to this world!
