Week 2: I AM The Light of the World

Were you ever afraid of the dark as a child? There is something about the darkness that can take simple, ordinary, familiar things and turn them into complex, extraordinary, strange [READ SCARY] things. Then with a simple flip of the switch, light fills the room, and everything changes when imagination is confronted by reality. Light changes everything.

It should come as no surprise, then, that Jesus made this claim in John 8:12:

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Jesus = Light of the World.

You know what that means? All the complex, frustrating, painful, difficult [READ SCARY] things look different when He is in the room of our life. Jesus is the light. We have the promise that walking with Him means we will not fumble around in the darkness. Instead, we have the promise of life-giving LIGHT! How reassuring is that?

So, when the world all around us is overcome with darkness, fresh shadows, and looming hopelessness, we have the LIGHT. We will not be taken over by the darkness but instead will let our LIGHT shine so that others will see Jesus (Matthew 5:16).

This week let’s agree to do two things together. Simply knowing and believing that He is the Light of the World isn’t enough, we have to embrace that Light and let it shine into our lives. Let’s do it like this.

Start each day by asking Jesus to be the light for your path for the day ahead. Invite Him to show you the path you need to take for the day and to illuminate any places of darkness ahead of you so that you can walk in assurance and stability through the day.
Invite Him to shine His light into your heart to show you anything that needs to be cleaned out. If we join with David in his prayer for a clean heart, the light of Jesus will readily show us our hearts and allow us to submit all of the things we have to Him.

Jesus, our Jesus, our Savior, our Hope, is THE Light of the World. Let’s let Him shine in our world and in our hearts like never before this week!
